According to Safe Work Australia, workplace exposure standards and limits apply to more than 600 substances and mixtures, including dusts, fumes, vapours, gases and mists that may be generated through workplace processes.
However, exposure limits should not be treated as a measure of a “safe” workplace. Businesses still have a duty to eliminate or minimise exposure so far as is reasonably practicable, regardless of whether an exposure limit exists.

The renaming from WES to WEL is intended to align Australia with international practice and provide greater clarity that the listed concentrations are legal exposure limits, not recommended targets.
